Black Ops 2 looks to emerge with no serious competitors
Look at other current military FPS games with a focus on online play. None have come close to offering a valid alternative to Call of Duty. EA liked to bill Battlefield 3 as the main competitor of Call of Duty. And although BF3 sold well, it didn't come close to besting Activision's warhorse.
So with all the advantages that Call of Duty still has, it doesn't make much sense to say it's a has been on the FPS market. We still have yet to see any contenders who can offer the same high quality multiplayer experience that Call of Duty does.
Call of Duty offers a slick, competitive FPS experience that has great controls, is highly customizable and is kept fresh with constant updates such as map packs. Another advantage Call of Duty still has is its user friendly interface and social features. The process of sitting down in your living room and getting into the action is a snap thanks to the matchmaking system. It's also easy to get together with friends and start blasting away.
people give Call of Duty for being stagnant, developer Treyarch is trying a few new things this time. The game has been given a more futuristic setting, complete with deadly drones and a cold war where a computer virus is the new atom bomb. There's also the Strike Force missions, which promise to offer sandbox levels to break up the linearity typically seen in the series. Even the story is going to have branching paths based on the actions of players.
This past Tuesday Activision announced the 2012 entry in the Call of Duty franchise: Black Ops 2, which is being developed by Treyarch. Of course it's not a big deal because Call of Duty is a burned out franchise that needs Grey Adidas Neo to die, or so its detractors like to say.
This year Halo 4, Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will be taking on Call of Duty. Maybe they'll offer something better than the experience Activision is currently giving gamers, or maybe not. After all, the last entries in the Halo and Medal of Honor series proved fruitless against the Call of Duty war machine.
Those who say they've moved on from Call of Duty are of course the minority. The series is still the most popular gaming franchise on the market, and still manages to top Xbox Live's chart of most played online games.
Although I enjoyed the gameplay of Battlefield 3, I must admit that its user experience just doesn't compare to Call of Duty. There's Adidas Neo Cloudfoam Xpression

The truth is Call of Duty still offers what is probably the best online FPS experience you can get on the consoles. I've felt the same franchise fatigue everyone else has with the series, which is up to its 9th entry with Black Ops 2. And yet, I can't say there's been any real alternative on the market.
Hating on Call of Duty is is the new favourite pastime of some cynical gamers. The series is often accused of never reinventing itself, and giving players the same FPS experience since Activision decided to annualize the franchise.
the campaign are a positive sign, and I'm hoping multiplayer gets the same treatment.
Call of Duty is still king. Not because Activision is evil, or because mainstream gamers are drones that want nothing but the exact same thing every year. The truth is no one has come forward with a FPS that tops what Call of Duty 4 started bringing to the table back in 2007.
So if Call of Duty is passe, what exactly is the new hotness?
no real matchmaking system present, and keeping track of your squadmates is a pain. That is if you're lucky enough to be put on the same team as them.
I'm always open to experiencing a new FPS game. It's my favourite genre after all. At the same time, it's hard for me to justify swearing off Call of Duty when I haven't seen another game present a superior multiplayer experience.
Therein lies the central problem with the criticism against Call of Duty. No matter how you feel about the series, there's no denying that not one capable challenger has stepped forward to dethrone it.
