"It's a reinforcement of healthy behaviours," she said.
Cold Lake RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Cunningham will help facilitate the first women's group.
Yvette Houle, the executive director of the Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Centre, said the addition of the women's group could make the program as a whole much more effective.
The program is delivered by two facilitators, one from the RCMP and one from a local social service agency.
"Most people think about physical violence and absolutely, that's a part of it. That's what we respond to in the law enforcement community more often than not," he noted. "But family violence can encompass so much more."
"We realized once we had (the men's group) running that it really needs a compliment to it because the whole family needs to learn new skills," said Cold Lake and District FCSS manager Christine McWillis.
"If only the man is in the Better Way program and the woman is still living with him, then we're only addressing 50 per cent of that problem," she said.
"It's an educational program for women in the community who want to learn more about healthy relationships and to learn about how they can deal with partners in a healthy way when it comes to arguments or their relationship in general," she said.
A Better Way Men's Group delivers a program designed to teach men who have been the abusers in a relationship or who fear that their relationship may become abusive techniques to manage their anger and promote healthy relationships with their significant other.
Both the men's and the women's groups are delivered once a week for Adidas Primeknit Mens Shoes six weeks, and participants can joint at any time.
He helped facilitate men's, women's and youth groups while at the Lac La Biche RCMP detachment, a community which saw the program delivered with great success, he said.
Social service providers in Cold Lake are hoping a program designed to promote healthy relationships will have twice the success with the addition of a program for women to compliment an established program for men.
"What often happens is that the man will change his behaviour for the better, but the woman will not know why," she said.
"A lot of it is about knowledge and whether you're the abuser or on the receiving end of the abuse, both are going to learn all sorts of things," he said. "They are going to learn about anger, how to manage it, about triggers for abuse they are going to learn a lot of new skills. You have to remember that, in many cases, we are products of our environments and people adopt the behaviour that they saw in the homes that they grew up in."

"The woman also needs some information."
The program is set be offered for the second time in Cold Lake beginning early February and, this time around, a separate group for women who have been abused (or who fear that abuse may become an issue in their relationship) will also be offered.
"This doesn't put blame on the woman, but she herself might learn that she is doing something to trigger these unhealthy behaviours and he could change her way of communicating to help him in his efforts to change," Houle added.
Both groups have been made available through a steering committee made up of a number of social service agencies, including Cold Lake and District FCSS the groups' administrative lead agency as well as Cold Lake Victim Services and the crisis centre.
"It's really about ensuring that the skills that are being learned in the men's program will be equally learned in the women's program. This way, when the man comes home from his training and he's trying to implement what he's learning, the woman is also familiar with the training and Adidas Primeknit Women
Houle said that it's important for men who are trying to change their behaviour to have partners that understand and expect the change in behaviour that can happen.
"We'll teach them about the changes that are happening and that they are going to have to respond differently as well. If she's always waiting for an angry reaction and the guy, for instance, is learning that if something is triggering him, instead of having an angry reaction, he may go for a walk. The wife may not be prepared for that. He just takes off for a walk and she doesn't know what's going on."
He added that the skills learned can be applied in relationships where any type of abuse is occurring whether it's physical, financial, spiritual, verbal or emotional in nature.
Houle stressed that abusive behaviour, physical or otherwise, has no justification, but that it's important for women who remain in the relationship to have the tools they need to support their partners' efforts to change.
Way Men's Group will attend the women's group, but stressed that it's not necessary for a woman to have a partner in the men's group to register or vice versa.
