The Luthers, Meyer and Meyer's boyfriend see each other with Landon at least once a month. Both women celebrated Mother's Day, with Meyer receiving a gift from Landon.
On the drive back to Mitchell, Megan Luther, 33, texted Meyer. The conversation hasn't stopped since, and today they have a relationship that is part maternal, part sisterly and part best friends.
On June 5, 2013, the Mitchell couple first met Ashley Meyer, a 21 year old Sioux Falls resident who had decided to give her unborn son up for adoption, making, as she puts it, "two moms with one child."
"There is that fear, but I would want a birth mother to be confident when she is making that decision," Megan Luther says. "I don't want any birth mother to be coerced."
In that first meeting, and in every meeting afterward, something special happened. Adidas Originals Shoes Basketball
Landon left the hospital on Sept. 24, and baby, mothers and father departed in one car, with Meyer returning home before the Luthers headed out to Mitchell. When the Luthers finalized Landon's adoption in Davison County, Meyer came to the courthouse.
The Luthers, who will celebrate Womens Adidas Originals Trainers
their seventh wedding anniversary this summer, accepted Meyer's offer gladly. They had gone through the pre adoption process about five months earlier lightning fast in adoption time and were waiting in Chicago O'Hare Airport when a call came from Bethany Christian that Meyer had chosen the Luthers as prospective parents.
The Luthers approached that first "blind date" with some apprehension. Meyer knew all about them and was thrilled they, too, were Detroit Red Wings fans and they knew nothing about her but her name and age. They also knew Meyer could change her mind.
"She opened us up to everything," Megan Luther says. "She called us at 2 in the morning when her water broke, and we were part of that entire process."
"The judge said to me, 'I honor you for what you have done because you are one great woman. A lot of people don't do that,' " Meyer says.
"It's unusual in the fact they have so much openness, but it's a good unusual," says Melissa Steltz, an adoption specialist with Bethany Christian Services. "It absolutely works for them, and they have just embraced each other's families and have become one large family."
So, adoption. But Meyer's vision was more than simply choosing adoptive parents, meeting them once, then handing over the baby in the hospital. She wanted them to take the pregnancy journey with her, pregnancy photos and all.
"We called our family and close friends before Adidas Los Angeles Mens
we boarded the plane," Megan Luther says. "On the plane, I wrote a letter telling how we felt. It's pretty hard to describe."
In January 2013, when Meyer, now 22, discovered she was pregnant, she admits to being scared at first. She felt unready for motherhood, and the biological father had expressed no interest.
"Ashley was there to celebrate with them," Steltz says. "That was a first, for Bethany here, anyway."
Meyer had terminated her parental rights in December 2013 in a Minnehaha County courtroom. Words from the presiding judge reaffirmed the decision she had made more than six months earlier.
The latter never was an option, Meyer says.

"I do not like it at all," she says of abortion. "Once you've created something, it's life. I could either do something amazing and let someone else who's been wanting to be a parent for the longest time and can't have kids and I could just be pregnant when I'm ready. Or be a single parent and struggle and (probably) have my kid be a single parent."
At the relationship's center is Landon, a curly haired charmer with a heart melting smile. When he was born Sept. 22, the Luthers were in the delivery room. Megan Luther posted on Facebook, "Our dream came true thanks to the selfless decision of Landon's birth mother, Ashley Meyer. She is an amazing, strong woman and we are happy to say that we have expanded our family from two to four."
And while open adoptions have become more common, the strong relationship between the Luthers and Meyer has impressed even seasoned officials.
Meyer looked at the life she would offer her unborn son: holding down two jobs, putting him in day care for hours at a time, unable to be with him. She had tuition debts looming over her from an earlier stint at college, and family members who proposed either raising the baby themselves or abortion.
